Baby Health Checkup
Child Health Checks

In South Australia parents or guardians are provided with a "Blue Book" (different colours for other states) when their baby is born and this book is a vital resource for your child's health checks, monitoring growth and development and local resources or service providers.

Most child health checks only cover what is in the "Blue Book" and do not look at a wider range of milestones or activities to help your child learn and grow which may prevent early detection of "failure to thrive" or other abnormalities in growth and development.

A child who does not meet the minimum requirements for growth and development milestones may be referred to as a "failure to thrive" and require a Paediatrician review, other abnormal findings may require other specialist referrals.

Immunisations

In South Australia the National Immunisation Schedule (NIP) informs healthcare providers and parents or guardians what immunisations are funded at which age, additional funded vaccines for "Medically At Risk" and Aboriginal children.

All vaccines administered in Australia by a registered health professional who has access to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) can upload the immunisations to the national immunisation register.

Parents and guardians have the right to refuse immunisations however this may affect centrelink payments for Family Tax Benefit (FTB) Part A and Child Care Subsidy, or payments are reduced/cancelled under the "No Jab, No Pay" policy.

Unvaccinated children up to the age of 6 may also be decline enrolement in
childcare, family day care, preschool, kindergarten and early learning centres and result in a catch up of all missed vaccines that may be traumatic for the child.

Catch up Immunisations

Children under the age of 20 who have missed some or all of their vaccines under the NIP are eligible for funded catch up vaccines and for those who missed the HPV vaccine this is funded up to the age of 26.

Children who were born overseas and now living in Australia with a Medicare card are eligible for funded catch up vaccines tunder the NIP. For children who are living in Australia but do not have a Medicare card should still be vaccinated and where applicable provide all relevant tax receipts to their insurance company for reimbursement.

Parents and guardians of children who do not have their childs previous records and unsure of their childs immunity should discuss options to obtain immunisation status or revaccination may be required.
